Supposedly the John Crockett Tavern was used as a smallpox hospital during the war and burnt down as a result of that use at the end of the war. Are there any Dr. diaries or lists of CW hospitals in the Jefferson County, 1860-65? What type of military records might there be to try to research this? Would there be any kind of list of soldiers who survivied the pox that would tell where they were treated? I suppose most were sent to a pest house to die. The old tavern was on the road from Knoxville to Abingdon, VA. A Col. Thomas Cain from Morristown told others of the site of the pest house in the early 1900's.
